On Books That Have Become Television Series

Noa Menhaim, editor, essayist, and cultural researcher, in a series of meetings about some of the most talked-about series on television and the books behind them. The last several years have brought to the small screen an unparalleled flow of many dozens of book-based series. Noa Menhaim and her guests will attempt to identify the reasons for this phenomenon and discuss the eternal question: which was better, the series or the book?
9/2/21 First meeting – Shirley Gal, Haaretz‘s sex and relationship reporter, on romantic novels and feminism in corsets in Bridgerton, based on Julia Quinn’s book series.
16/2/21 Second meeting – Yaara Keydar, fashion historian and curator, on the nineteen sixties and fashion’s role in shaping identity in The Queen’s Gambit, the series based on Walter Tevis’s book.
23/2/21 Third meeting – Elad Bar-Noy, Yedioth Ahronoth’s cultural and literary critic, on horror, monsters, and racism in the series Lovecraft Country, based on Matt Ruff’s book.
2/3/21 Fourth meeting – Marlyn Vinig film researcher and screenwriter, on renouncing religion, repentance, and on black and white in Unorthodox, based on Deborah Feldman’s book.
9/3/21 Fifth meeting – Shir Reuven, screenwriter and comedian, on young love, sex, and the millennial generation in Normal People, based on Sally Rooney’s book.
- The meetings will be held on Zoom.
- It is highly recommended to watch the relevant series before the meetings.
