Out of Place: The Poetics of Displacement

Maktoob مكتوب- Arabic Literature in Hebrew and Mishkenot Sha'ananim are pleased to invite the general public to a unique literary event

The program:

Translating the Missing Prof. Yehuda Shenhav-Shaharbani, editor-in-chief of the Maktoob series.

On Being a Refugee and Laundry Lines a bilingual reading with poet Rajaa Ghanem Danaf and Dr. Tami Israeli.

There is One Carob Tree a theatrical reading from Al-Rasa’il – The Letters by Mahmoud Darwish and Samih al-Qasim performed by actors Hisham Suliman and George Iskandar.

The event will be accompanied by songs performed by singer Amal Murkus.

The Maktoob مكتوب series of the Van Leer Institute in Jerusalem is a series of books dedicated to translating Arabic literature into Hebrew. It offers an in-depth acquaintance with Arab culture and the Middle East. The books in the series are translated according to a unique model of joint work between Jews and Arabs and include canonical works from Palestinian and Arab literature.

The event is part of a translators' residency program in collaboration between Maktoob مكتوب and Mishkenot Sha'ananim.

  • Entry will only be possible with a recovering / vaccinated certificate or a negative COVID-19 test performed 24 hours before the date of the event.
  • Participation is free of charge, but advance registration is required.
  • Places are unmarked.
  • Please wear a mask and observe the instructions of the Ministry of Health.
  • Number of seats are limited | The program is subject to change.
